All the way down

Stockholm, Sweden

I’m really not a train guy. Despite all the images on this blog suggesting otherwise, I couldn’t tell you the first detail about locomotives or gauges, routes or liveries.

But in the gleaming – or dilapidated – vehicles, the frenetic stations and the detritus, I see stories. Of adventure. Of tragedy. Beginnings and endings. Speed and stasis. The machines that deliver us to the moments: the defining experiences of travel.

The dark corners of a station, the symmetry of rails, rails stretching into the distance. The intersection of story and aesthetic. They draw me forward and compel me to shoot.

To be in transit is to keep moving, sometimes while being still. There is always more to see and more to reveal.

After spending a few days working in Sweden in late 2022, I had the pleasure of a weekend of exploration in Stockholm. The metro system is a transit shooter’s dream. This will be the first of several from that weekend.

If we are always arriving and departing, it is also true that we are eternally anchored. One’s destination is never a place but rather a new way of looking at things.
