Venice, Italy

Not the usual view of Venice. It was my third visit to the city, but my first trip to the island of Murano, famous for its glass artists. And on a cold December morning, it was quite different from my previous summer experience.

The fog meant that water taxis were only doing nonstop trips — a 25 minute ride from outside the Santa Lucia train station. I stood on the stairs at the right side of the boat, gloves and hat pulled tight, taking in the bleak mood.

Pulling out of the canal and into the open water as we headed north, these were the briccole, the wooden poles marking shallower water along the north side of Venice, near Baia del re.
