    The Cherry Street Bridge, opened in 1931 and officially known as Cherry Street Strauss Trunnion Bascule Bridge. But less well-known is that it was designed by Joseph Strauss, designer of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge.

  • The Corner

    Beginning in 1895, the dawn of professional baseball, and for more than 100 years onward, there was a stadium at this intersection in downtown Detroit. First Bennett Park, then in 1912, Navin Field (opened the same day as Boston’s Fenway), later renamed Tiger Stadium in 1961. But on the day this shot was taken, August 9, 2008, there was demolition.

    Near the entrance to the park, this tunnel marks the beginning of the trail that leads to the first overlook of the falls.

    From my brief walking tour around Amsterdam in 2012, this was taken just steps from the Boats, Houses, Houseboats shot.

  • Empty Freighter

    The port of Owen Sound is a gateway for grain moving east from the prairies, and goods and people moving west. This empty freighter is used to haul steel and other raw materials. When fully loaded, the waterline rises to the upper band of navy blue paint — an incredible change of draft.
